The Opportunity:
My Smart Grandkids is helping kids and young adults connect with and assist seniors while growing and learning their own technology career skills - by becoming ‘TechMates’.

STEM occupation fields are one of the fastest growing job opportunity segments throughout the world (See STEM 101: Intro to Tomorrow's Jobs). Providing kids and young adults with an opportunity to learn hirable technology skills is a huge goal for My Smart Grandkids. We want to teach kids and young adults not only how to interact with and grow relationships with seniors in their community, we want to, at the same time, advance their technological skills, grow their ability to troubleshoot technology and hone their skills in teaching technology.

Kids and young adults can sign up to become a My Smart Grandkids TechMate. This is a volunteer position where kids and young adults can not only give back to their community and make a real difference in the lives of seniors, but they can learn marketable skills that they can use as they grow and start their own careers. Each TechMate will work with a TechLead, who will guide them and show them the ropes of technology training and troubleshooting.
Volunteers - TechMates:
My Smart Grandkids hire and work with My Smart Grandkids ‘TechLeads’ who in turn work with our 'TechMates'.
TechMates are kids and young adults who volunteer with My Smart Grandkids to help seniors with technology guidance and assistance. They work alongside a TechLead in a group or one-on-one setting to help seniors learn about what is available in technology, how technology can positively affect their daily life, and be there to answer questions and support their technological journey. They are also there to provide assistance in technology training classes, helping with demonstrations and lessons.
Teachers and Mentors - TechLeads:
TechLeads are experienced and qualified My Smart Grandkids staff who lead all technology sessions and trainings with the help from the TechMates. TechLeads not only provide help to the seniors, they also work with the TechMates to guide and teach them how to train and troubleshoot technology and grow meaningful relationships with the seniors we’re helping. All TechMates will work alongside a TechLead for all help sessions, training, and presentations.
Volunteer options available:
Kids and young adults can contact My Smart Grandkids if they are interested in becoming a Volunteer TechMate. We will schedule a time to meet with you in person or via skype to assess your technical skills. This will allow us to match you with the volunteer opportunity, location and TechLead that best fits. Volunteer opportunities are available on an as-needed basis. If we schedule you for a TechMate session, you will be able to earn 1-6 hours per day, depending upon the help needed. If a TechMate session becomes available and you are a good fit, My Smart Grandkids will contact you with the session or training information and hours needed. At that time, you can choose to accept or reject the volunteer TechMate session opportunity.
